Harbor Freight Tools broke ground on its$75 million distribution center expansion at the Tri-County Gateway Industrial Park in Dillon Wednesday as S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley and representatives from Marion, Dillon and Marlboro Counties looked on.
The groundbreaking ceremony was a formality after Harbor Freight Tools’ announced the expansion last month. Harbor Freight Tools’ Chief Administrative Officer Allan Mutchnik said the expansion will double the size of their current facility in Dillon, which is already the companies largest distribution site.
“With this expansion, Harbor Freight will be doubling the size of this facility from one million square feet to about two million under roof and our local workforce will increase from the current 680 employees to about 900 employees,” he said.
The expansion is expected to be complete by early 2014.
The company originally opened its facility in the large industrial park that is owned by Dillon, Marion and Marlboro counties in 2001 with a $20 million warehouse that employed about 500 in distribution and customer service operations.
